Saratoga Springs, home to 2 lively colleges, Empire State and Skidmore, is also known as Saratoga, one of the more interesting towns in New York - if not the country. For one thing, it is best known for the Saratoga Race Course which opened on August 3, 1863. This thoroughbred track is the oldest continuously-operating sporting event of any kind in the United States. Many race regulars come here to this town on the west bank of the Hudson for the summer racing season. The city has a number of cultural and recreational institutions, with more than 20 golf courses in the area. What Is Special about Saratoga Springs
The Saratoga Race Course is one of the top racing scenes in the world, culminating in the Travers Stakes. Its history of its mineral springs going way back into the 1800's makes this a special place - springs are still prevalent throughout the town. During the season the town is extremely busy. Crime is low.

Real estate prices are fairly high, as is traffic during the summer season. Winters are cold.
Climate and Physical Environment
Saratoga Springs is in eastern New York, just north of Albany and 20 miles from Schenectady. The average Jan temp is about 20 degrees and the average July temp is 70 degrees.
Restaurants & Cultural Scene
The Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) is a covered outdoor amphitheater located on the grounds of the Saratoga Spa State Park. a. SPAC is the summer home of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York City Ballet. There is the Spa Little Theater as well as several museums. Those include the National Museum of Dance and Hall of Fame, and the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. The city is also notable for its vibrant night life, of which Caffè Lena has seen many big performers, including Bob Dylan.

The crime rate is about a third the national average.

Saratoga Hospital serves the area, and there are other hospitals nearby in such places as Glen Falls.
Transportation
AMTRAK provides service to Saratoga. Albany is the nearest commercial airport.
