Living a College Town Lifestyle in Edmond, Oklahoma

One of the fastest growing communities in the state of Oklahoma, Edmond is a small yet emerging college community. It has been named as one of the best small towns in America and well as one of the "Top 100 Places to Live in 2007." It is about 11 miles from Oklahoma City.


University of Central Oklahoma and Oklahoma Christian University students make their home here. The city also encourages the outside display of art. The downtown center is vital with thriving shops and great bookstores like Best of Books. 

Where to Retire in Edmond and Home Prices

Baby boomers in retirement can either live in mixed generation neighborhoods downtown, or in active adult communities which are being built in the area (see link at right).

Real Estate Values
The median home value in Edmond in late 2020, was $263,499 according to Zillow. The NAR lists the median price in nearby Oklahoma City far lower at $184,800 in the 3rd quarter of 2020.

What Is Special about Edmond

Numerous awards as a "Best" small town or place to live including one of the "Top 100 Places to Live in 2007" by Relocate Magazine. Edmond is one of Oklahoma's most affluent  towns. Edmond offers an excellent lifestyle with many recreational facilities including Arcadia Lake, Festival Market Place, and Pelican Bay. There are numerous nice neighborhoods.  There are 2 universities in town, Oklahoma Central University and Oklahoma Christian University.

What Is Not Special about Edmond

Edmond was the scene of one of the first "going postal" murders in 1986 when 14 people were massacred. The knock on Edmond from folks who live in Oklahoma City is that the people from Edmond play in OKC, people in OKC don't really want to go to Edmond. Transportation to here by road is by a long and crowded access road.

Climate and Physical Environment

Edmond is just to the north of Oklahoma City near the center of the Sooner State.  The July average temp is in the low 80s and the January average is in the mid 30s.  The biggest weather fear is tornadoes.

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

Edmond has a bookstore, a farmers market,  the University of Central Oklahoma, a daily newspaper, local theatre groups, street festivals, and a busy library. TripAdvisor shows 256 restaurants in Edmond, many of which are independent and of various ethnicities. BestofBooks is a strong independent bookstore. Oklahoma Central University and Oklahoma Christian University are located in Edmond.

Crime

The crime rate in Edmond is less than half the national average.

Medical Facilities

The Edmond Medical Center is in Edmond. But Oklahoma City has numerous hospitals including OU Medicine, a collaboration among OU Medical Center, The Children's Hospital, OU Medical Center Edmond, OU Physicians, OU Children’s Physicians and the OU Health Sciences Center. The University of Oklahoma College of Medicine is located in OKC.

Transportation

The Will Rogers (Oklahoma City) Airport is nearby. The Eddy provides mass transit
