Five colleges have branch campuses in or just outside Manassas, including George Mason University and Northern Virginia Community College. This historic college community is the site of two famous Civil War battles (the first and second Battles of Bull Run). This town of about 35,000 people is close enough to Washington D.C. that is a suburb of that city, yet far enough away to provide refuge from city life.

The community colleges and branch campuses provide some cultural opportunities. The Manassas Battlefield is interesting. The many cultural outlets of Washington D.C. are conveniently close.
